Christmas

Each year, when Christmas is approaching, I start to reflect on the disgusting consumerism of this most holy of holidays. Sure it's nice to give people extravagant presents, but deep down, what do most of us like more than giving? You guessed it...getting. Some of you more self-actualized people out there may like giving more, but speaking for the adolescent population, I think it is safe to say that the first thing that most teens think of when someone says "Christmas" is the mounds of presents just waiting for them under the tree. I admit it, as disgusting as it may be, I probably get just as excited as the next kid when I come down the stairs on Christmas day. I think this is going to be one of the best Christmas's for me. I mean, come on, how often do you get a 3 month trip to France for Christmas. :D

But even more tacky then the disgusting greed at Christmas time are the putrid decorations that people put up! I mean, come on people! Christmas lights are nice when used in good taste, but most people don't even use common sense when they put up decorations, let alone good taste. Especially those icicle lights. Come on, they don't even look anything like icicles! They look like a string of bulbs broken and hanging down at regular intervals.

But who doesn't like Christmas, be it for the real meaning or the greed?

Will.. Must say it is a interesting topic. your thoughts and then this person named Greg has his thoughts.. is there any room for my thoughts?? Let me see.. You are both right.. we are a greedy bunch yet we do fatten the calf.. and the junk we buy is all made in third world.. so, I think I will just make fudge and give it out as gifts this christmas
but if I do that I will be burning electricity and the shareholders at Fortis will get richer. See it is a no win situation.. just enjoy
life as it comes and maybe one kind gesture a day will help east it all. Aunt Joan

Good post, Will. Kind of reminds me of a post that Nick wrote last December and posted on SPYThoughts...it was also interesting to read your comment on it over a year ago.

Like I said last year, I will not be putting up a tree or tacky lights, instead I will be setting a couple of candles in the window and maybe a wreath on the door.

My main gripe is that we start celebrating Christmas so early - in most cases almost 6 weeks before Mary has even had her first contraction :D

Here's a suggestion - instead of buying people gifts....why not donate some money to a worthy cause/charity on someone else's behalf and give them a card telling them you've done it.

Another idea to add to Rushan's: this year our family has decided to give each other "experiences" rather than objects as gifts - this might be a dinner out at a restaurant for the family, a weekend holiday away somewhere together, a trip to a museum, or a month's free lawnmowing...

I guess by giving each other experiences and things to do together as a family, what we're really doing is reinforcing relationships and giving ourselves time together doing things.
